We Are Girls: A Day in the Life
Contributed by: Elena Carey
We Are Girls – Austin 2016 is quickly approaching. Saturday, November 5, 2016, thousands of attendees will convene at Austin High School to “Find Their Power” (insert flexing muscles emoji here). We wanted to share what the We Are Girls experience is like for a participant. Here’s what you day at We Are Girls – Austin could look like:
Rise and Shine: You wake up. You’re a little nervous, but mostly psyched. Today is We Are Girls!
8:00am – Doors Open
Girls and the adults who care about them, including parents, guardians, guidance counselors, teachers, Girl Scout Troop Leaders, and more flood through the front doors of Stephen F. Austin High School. The Girls Empowerment Network Spirit Squad cheers them on to the beat of girl power tunes. You feel your energy rise as you walk through the doors alongside girls, and girls, and girls, and girls.
9:00am – Girls Empowerment Rally!
You dance, cheer, sing, and grow excited for the day ahead.
9:45am: Meet-n-Greet with Featured Conference Speakers
You meet Featured Conference Speakers Coach Keisha and Emily Roberts! To learn more about these incredible women check out our We Are Girls- Austin speaker page.
10:15am: Session 1
You’re feeling like you could use a little stretching and empowerment for the day ahead. You attend:
Yoga for a Better Body Image presented by Yoga RX, which is described in the program as “Did you know that Yoga can bring your awareness internally to create a healthier body image for you? When we only compare external qualities our view becomes insufficient. Let’s create more self-confidence & a better body image by changing the way we view ourselves through Yoga!
You get into the yoga and feel yourself easing into loosened muscles and heightened self-esteem.
11:30am & 12:45pm: Session 2a/2b or Lunch or GENfair
Lunch A or Lunch B: Time to eat! You chow down on some Thundercloud Subs lunches in the cafeteria.
GENfair: You have a lot of energy after that meal and decide to attend the GENfair, which includes a variety of activity stations. GEN Program Director, Caroline Crawford, leads group activities, dancing, and sing-a-longs from the stage.
Session 2a or 2b: What is Girls Empowerment Network all about? To find out you attend: Real Beauty Assembly presented by Girls Empowerment Network, which is described as an assembly where girls will explore beauty in the media and discuss how it affects the way they feel about their own bodies. Girls will decide what they think is beautiful and use technology to advocate “real beauty.”
2:00pm: Session 3
You love your mom! And you want to become closer with her so you have a brilliant idea to attend a mother and daughter workshop together. You attend:
Mothering & Daughtering presented by Candace Avila, M. Ed. which is described in the program as “What if our daughters could learn the truth of how amazing they are before life makes them forget? What if mothers could stay close to their daughters instead of having them pulled away by the competing forces of the world? Mothers and daughters will discover how they can stay connected through a heart & soul-filled mini-art project, girl-talk and discussion.”
3:00pm: Close of Day
It seems too soon to go home, but it’s time. After a day packed with fun, creative self-expression, education, and empowerment, you head home for dinner and a good night’s rest.
