The Girls Empowerment Network marked a major milestone as it held its 10th annual We Are Girls Conference in Austin over the weekend.

More than 2,000 young girls and their mothers were invited to Anderson High School to listen to speakers and participate in sessions that helped them discover how powerful it is to be a woman.

3rd through 8th graders learned about several topics including coding, building confidence, drawing, storytelling and financial literacy.

This year’s theme was “Become Unstoppable” and that’s exactly how organizers say they hope each girl feels after the conference.

Among those who spoke were Austin native and anti-bullying activist Lizzie Velasquz and founder of Watch Her Work Denise Hamilton. Both talked about the challenges girls face and how to overcome them.
