Project Coordinator

Monica Balderas

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a certificate in Health Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin.

Experience: Monica has over six years of experience working directly with youth, four of which have been dedicated to youth development programs. She has a background in DEI and has facilitated DEI workshops for student organizations at UT Austin, as well as spoken at the statewide Out-of-School-Time-Initiatives Conference in 2022 and 2023 about equitable approaches to family engagement and mental health, respectively. Monica started her journey with Girls Empowerment Network as a long-time volunteer while she was in college, and upon graduation went to work at Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area (BGCAA). She served as the Director of Family Services for BGCAA over the course of three and a half years, then found her way back to Girls Empowerment Network as Project Coordinator where she hopes to bring a unique blend of community engagement and cultural responsiveness. In her free time, Monica loves to spend time bonding with her niece, watching documentaries, discovering new music, and trying different food trucks around Austin with her partner.

What I love about Girls Empowerment Network: I love that Girls Empowerment Network has a relentless pursuit to make the world a better place for youth, and you can feel that passion emanating from every single one of the staff members. There are always opportunities for personal and professional growth, and I am so proud to be part of a team of incredible change makers!
