Addressing the Impact Adultification Has on Children of Color with an Emphasis on Black Girls

Let’s start by reflecting on our childhood while intertwining some moments of fun and laughter! Participants will learn differences and similarities between adultification and parentification and will identify three risks related to subjective aging. Participants will create a personal/family and community plan on how to respond to scenarios centered around adultification of children in general.

In this session, you will have the opportunity to personalize a blank journal and complete 2 creative art journal assignments.

Beyoncé’s Chopper Challenge

Students will be working in teams to complete a construction activity, building a helipad for Beyoncé’s helicopter. Team members will each have individual team roles which mimic various parts of the construction process and will be building with basic arts and crafts materials. Teams will have to work within constraints like a budget, time limits and with specification requirements like height and creativity.

H.A.I.R. From Uh-Oh to Ta-da!

H.A.I.R. avatar comes to life with a performance of Indie Arie’s “I Am Not My Hair.” Participants will go on a voyage of magic, creativity and pep talk. This voyage will include a video viewing of how plastic is recycled and produced to make many things including synthetic hair. Spaghetti and gummy-worms will become sculptures of participants wildest imaginations when it comes to the science of hair! After our H.A.I.R. voyage, girls will be challenged to create a plan on reducing their purchases of anything plastic.

Healthy Living for Queens 101

Participants will create a painting on 8 by 10 canvas panel with the image of a crown. Participants will paint positive messages that will help them reach their inner queen.

Rocket Science & Rocket Racers

Students investigate Newton’s third law of motion by constructing rocket-powered racing cars.  In this hands-on activity students will construct their own racing cars. In two racing trials, the racers will shoot along a course and the distance the racers travel will be measured. Between trials, students redesign their racers to improve their performance and solve any “mechanical” problems that crop up.

This workshop is a spinoff of my own personal dealings and enlightenment on not feeling good enough, which girls and women struggle with. We grow to feel less than or unqualified

Youth Awareness Workshop – Is it love or is it Trafficking?
