Experience: Sidney’s passion for girls’ issues began when she worked with After-school Centers on Education (ACE), and Communities in Schools (CIS). She saw a devastating trend of low self-esteem in the girls that she worked with. She is especially passionate about body image issues for girls and young women, and hopes that girls will feel enough just as they are. Today, girls are expected to ‘have it all’ and ‘be perfect’ and ‘be successful’. She hopes to help girls realize how unattainable these expectations are, and instead define their own success by finding an internal belief in their power while practicing self-compassion and resiliency. Upon moving to Austin in 2014, she was thrilled to discover Girls Empowerment Network and started her work at GEN as an intern.
What I like about GEN: At GEN, I have a profession that aligns with my passion. I love our mission – we know that girls are powerful and we get to give them a space and the right skills to ignite it! I get to help girls believe in themselves and build their confidence – dream job! GEN is also the most incredible place to work because of our amazing staff. Everyone is here because this is their passion, and it’s really cool to see everyone working towards the same mission. We’re always lifting each other up with support and encouragement.
