Girl Connect Uses Dove Self-Esteem Project Resources to Teach Girls About Real Beauty

In Girl Connect, our school-based program for girls in grades 3-12, one of our curriculum modules covers ‘Real Beauty.’ The module helps girls explore what the media says is beautiful and identify what they define as beautiful (on the inside and on the outside) for themselves. Typically, the group begins with the facilitator asking girls to brainstorm what a model or celebrity on the cover of a magazine looks like. What is she wearing? What is her hair color? Eye color? Get Excited for Girl Connect!

For over twenty years, Girls Empowerment Network (GEN) has responded to the systematic decline of self-esteem in girls. We have held conferences, workshops, camps, and summits to ignite the power within Texan girls. GEN staff always noticed that something special was happening when girls circled up, joined their peers in an authentic space, and had the opportunity to just be themselves. It didn’t matter if the girls were eight or eighteen, these young women were gaining more than just higher self-esteem – they were rewriting their stories and shedding labels. Not only was their confidence increasing, but girls began to truly understand how unstoppable they are.

Come to We Are Girls Houston to meet the science superhero, Volta!

Jancy McPhee is Volta, one member of the Female Superheroes of Science: a group of female scientists and engineers that is participating in the We Are Girls Houston Conference for the third year in 2019. During the first part of their workshop, the superheroes discuss their careers in STEM, the challenges they’ve encountered, and how they overcame those challenges. In the second part, they ask the girls to join them in becoming a superhero, too. The girls get to create their own superhero for themselves: choosing a name and deciding on a superpower they currently have or wish they had. Jancy’s favorite part of the workshop? A selfie at the end of the workshop with the Female Superheroes of Science and all of their new recruits!
